• Twenty Year Drought Broken: Meg Nunn 2016

  • Golf Central Queensland / Golf Central Highlands (CQ/CH) took out the Meg Nunn Salver Shield for the first time in two decades on Thursday 8 September 2016.

The team of (from left-right) non-playing captain Carmel O'Keeffe (Springsure), Toni Morgan (Emerald), Cheryl Fisher (Boyne Island Tannum Sands), Casey Drochmann (Biloela),Trudy Morgan (Emerald), Sonia Bray (Emerald), and Marti Kendall (Yeppoon) took on six other Queensland Ladies Golf Districts at the Kingaroy Golf Club.

Team Captain, Carmel O’Keeffe said, “the team were two points behind Sunshine Coast Burnett on 28.5 points going into the final day last Friday.  We needed two matches and a square to ensure the win.”  The team was up against North Queensland who were in third position and hoping for a white wash to take second place.  It was a nail biting finish but CQ/CH drove home the first  win with Cheryl Fisher annihilating her opponent 8-7.  Casey Drochmann took the second win by finishing two up and Toni Morgan took the vital square to bring the team to victory. O’Keeffe said “we had a fantastic team that gave their all for the week.  We were in an almost unbeatable position, as the host district had finished all their matches... I was very proud of these ladies on and off the course.  It was an outstanding result for our small districts to combine and have a win at State level.  There was great golf by all the players in the tournament but especially in our team.

The final results for the tournament were CQ/CH s on 30 points followed by Sunshine Coast Burnett and District 28.5, North Queensland 23.5, Far North Queensland 19.5, Downs and South Western 16.5, Brisbane and District 15.5, Gold Coast 13.5. Every player in our team was very honoured to receive the once in a life time Meg Nunn Salver badge at the presentation lunch last Friday,” O’Keeffe said.

CQ Chair ladies match committee representative Kate Bell added "It is 20 years since our team has won the Meg Nunn Salver and what great excitement this has caused through our districts.”
