Congratulations to our representative players for the men’s Inter Association Team’s Event who played Palmer Colonial on the 7 and 8 November. Our Team members were, Scott Hampton, Jeff Butler, James Russell and Barrie England. Commiserations to Ashley O’Neil who qualified for the team but was unable to attend and as first reserve Barrie stepped up to the challenge.
As we were unable to obtain a practice round myself, James and Scott flew to Brisbane on Sunday afternoon where we hired a car and drove to Palmer Colonial. Barrie and Jeff decided to make a weekend of it and flew down a bit earlier which was a good idea.
The format was foursomes in the morning and fourball best ball in the afternoon with a Dinner hosted by Golf Qld that evening. A single stroke was played on the Tuesday morning followed by a presentation lunch hosted by Golf Queensland also. We were graced with the presence of Chairman Peter Castrisos and Board members Judy Logan and Carmel O’Keeffe.
Our Team played some solid golf but were unable to control the ball on all holes with the wind being a big factor. They lost a few balls in the water, which there was a lot of! We got 10th overall in the gross and 8th overall in the nett. Our boys were probably disappointed with the scores they recorded but I feel the tournament was an overall success, with our team and others showing great sportsmanship.
It was good that I was from Springsure, Scott from Moranbah, Jeff from Emerald, James from Blackwater and Barrie from Middlemount. With 5 people from different clubs spending time together there was some good camaraderie built which should be good for golf and hopefully more people will travel to more Opens.
