• Blackwater Ladies Secure Pennant Glory

  • Crowned Central Highlands Champion Golf Club for 2016 last month, the Blackwater ladies took their win one step further on October 8 with a win against the coastal zones in the Golf Central Queensland (CQ) District Ladies Pennant Finals held at Miriam Vale Golf Club. It was a nail biting finish with just one point securing the team's victory against a team from the Gladstone Golf Club.  The winning Blackwater No. 1 Team was Mrs Sharyn Latchford, Miss Rae Weiki, Mrs Chairmaine Ellis and Ms Gail Egan who played well to secure the team’s victory.

Blackwater’s winning team captain Mrs Sharyn Latchford said "I am still speechless after the win, I can't wipe the grin off my face.. I don't think it's been won out in the Central Highlands District since I've been here and that's 24 years! Our wonderful team is so very happy but I must commend all the ladies in my club who travelled throughout the year to attend the Central Highlands Opens otherwise we may not of had the opportunity to compete and win against the other zones.

CQ Chair Ladies Match Committee representative Ms Kate Bell said “What great excitement when Blackwater No 1 team won the pennant final from Gladstone No 2 team by one stroke.

Bell said “It was a wonderful day and very well supported by many clubs and players with a field of 56. Each year the pennant final is contested by each zone’s winning clubs.  This year the zone winners were: Keppel (Coastal) Yeppoon GC, Curtis (Southern) Gladstone GC, Valley (combination team of the smaller clubs) and Central Highlands (Blackwater GC).  Players from Moura, Gladstone, Miriam Vale, Rockhampton, Blackwater, Calliope, Yeppoon, Capricorn Country Club and Wowan travelled across the central Queensland region to compete in the prestigious event."

After good rain the week before the course was in great condition. Next year the event will be held in Biloela.
